Corporate Video – P&G "Thank You, Mom" Commercial Analysis
The Olympic games this past summer held the attention of the world for weeks. However, some of the advertising that went along with the games proved to be almost as powerful. This ‘Thank You, Mom’ ad from P&G was a piece that stood out throughout the entire games, and it’s not hard to see why.
From the very start, this commercial tells a story that reads almost like a movie. A young girl lives through a tornado, and a depiction of that same young girl as an Olympic athlete show the parallels of overcoming tragedy right away, in a fashion that’s immediately gripping. Overcoming obstacles is what the Olympic games are all about, after all.
However, as the commercial goes on, the depth of the story builds, and we realize that more and more athletes faced obstacles as children/teenagers, etc., to make it to these important games. The catch? They didn’t do it alone. It doesn’t take long for the focus to shift from the child/athlete, to the mother going to every event, treating every wound, reassuring every doubt, and making every sacrifice.
The most touching attribute, however, is the fact that the commercial shows mothers from all over the world, dealing with the same obstacles and struggles with their children. Then, celebrating their triumphs, too. Because P&G sells everything from personal hygiene to home products, the company itself shows up with a sense of comfort. It is a trusted name that has stood the test of time, and wants to depict the same kind of trust by showcasing the strength of motherhood.
The result is a heartwarming, powerful commercial that anyone with a mother can relate to, whether they’re an athlete or not. That trust carries over into the brand itself, making for an incredible connection between the brand, and the audience.
